Funded by the Lana Vento Fund for the Virgin Islands, The Next Generation Scholars Program (NGSP) seeks to provide first generation college bound students enrolled in public schools on St. Thomas with the coaching and support necessary to help them achieve their dreams of higher education. Beginning as early as their freshman year, eligible scholars are supported in high school through the admissions process, provided further support to ensure success in college, and prepared to be mentors to others in the Virgin

The program works with parents, mentors, donors, school personnel, and educational institutions to prepare Scholars for higher education and success in life. Parental participation is a key component of the program and is done through workshops, seminars, and individual family meetings.

While in high school, Scholars participate in the Saturday College Preparation Academy which focuses on preparation for the college admissions and application process, career awareness and exploration, and life skills training (résumé building, interviewing skills, and personal finance). The program also provides individual college counseling meetings with scholars and their families, and on-site school visits.

In college, Scholars transition to the Scholars College Success Initiative. The Class of 2014 will be our first cohort. Scholars will be supported through individualized counseling, assistance with summer employment, preparation for graduate school, and/or a career in their chosen field. NGSP alumni then serve the greater community as mentors after completion of our Scholar to Scholar Mentoring Series which will begin the summer of 2018. Participants will provide support by e-mentoring, in person individual meetings as part of a local organization and the NGS program.

The College Coach has designed resources to assist students with the process of applying to college. Getting into the right school starts well before an application is submitted, so take a moment to review and download these resources, and best of luck with the admissions process!
