CFVI awarded a grant to the Virgin Islands Marine Rebuild Fund to install mooring buoys throughout the USVI, in partnership with the Department of Planning & Natural Resources, Division of Coastal Zone Management (CZM), to reduce anchoring near coral reefs and support marine biodiversity. The moorings will reduce anchoring near ecologically important coral reefs as well as organize the bays to appeal for transient vessels. With this program, a more efficient monitoring process will be implemented, ensuring that boats have left these moorings before a major storm affects the territory. This project protects ecosystems, enhances tourism, and boosts the local economy by supporting job creation in marine charter industries and related businesses, with companies estimating additional hires and extended charters in USVI waters. By using moorings and preventing anchor damage, the program also helps preserve sensitive habitats and reduces costs from hurricane-related vessel damage while allowing boaters to become more educated on the importance of protecting marine habitats, fostering long-term environmental stewardship. The Marine Rebuild Fund is looking forward to continuing these impactful community programs.
