Funds

The community
foundation advantage

CFVI is unique in that our operating expenses are not funded by administrative fees charged to the majority of our funds. This ensures that 100% of contributions to named funds are distributed directly to support the charitable needs of the territory. In 2000 CFVI managed approximately 20 funds; today CFVI manages over 150 named funds.

Types of Funds

  • Donor-Advised Fund – Often referred to as a DAF, a donor-advised fund is a fund by which the donor, or designated advisor, may recommend grants to eligible recipients. DAF’s may be established as temporary or permanent funds. Establishing a donor-advised fund allows the donor to actively participate in the grantmaking process by periodically recommending how to use the gift.
  • Field of Interest Fund – This type of fund supports grants in a broad area of interest. The donor instructs CFVI to use available grant dollars in a particular program area, such as education, health, youth, or the environment, for example. Field of interest (FOI) funds are flexible enough to meet changing community needs in a specific interest area.
  • Scholarship Fund – This type of fund is established to award monies to educational institutions or individuals to support students who are pursuing a training or education opportunity. As part of the fund, donors can specify certain eligibility criteria.
  • Fiscal Sponsorship – A fiscal sponsorship is a fund in which CFVI extends the umbrella of its tax-exempt status to groups engaged in charitable activities related to CFVI’s mission.
  • Agency Fund – A fund established to support the work of an existing 501(c)(3).
  • Memorial Fund – A memorial fund is established in the event of a tragedy, disaster, or death, in the name of those who lost their lives. Usually, a group of people contribute to the fund, which is a living memorial. Often these funds are dedicated to a particular field of interest.
  • Endowment Fund – An endowment fund is established as a permanent fund by a donor to preserve the principal and use its income for a specific charitable purpose.

CFVI Advantage

CFVI is unique among community foundations in that our operating expenses are not funded by administrative fees charged to the majority of our funds, which ensures that 100% of contributions to named funds are distributed directly to support the charitable needs of the territory. CFVI started with approximately 10 named funds and today we manage more than 150 named funds.

CFVI offers advantages over commercial donor-advised funds and private foundations.
