CFVI awarded a grant to the Coral Oceanic Restoration Education (CORE) Foundation, with funding from the Popular VI Community Fund, to educate youth on how to establish and maintain an underwater coral nursery in the Virgin Islands National Park. CORE collaborated with Gifft Hill School to offer a marine stewardship course, certifying eight students in scuba diving and involving them in weekly nursery maintenance. Despite challenges like marine heatwaves and algae overgrowth, the team implemented protective measures, including shade structures and thermally tolerant coral species, to sustain the nursery. The project benefited students and the wider community, addressing a local need for certified divers and fostering environmental stewardship.
