In the January 2026 newsletter, we’re excited to share updates from across the islands!

Grant Highlights

  • CFVI Reaches $100,000 Humanities Challenge Fundraising Goal from the Federation of State Humanities Councils, with generous funding from the Mellon Foundation
  • The Judith A. Towle Environmental Studies Fund awarded $12,000 to the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society to restore Nevis’s coastline

Cultivating Change

  • The Humanities Council of the Virgin Islands awarded a $25,000 grant to support the initial phases of creating a documentary focused on the Bamboula/Bomba dance culture.
  • The Center for Educational Growth received a $25,000 grant to support its Film Over Gun Violence program, a youth-led humanities project that uses education, research, and filmmaking to address the gun violence crisis in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Fireburn Heritage received a $25,000 grant from the HCVI to support the development, printing, and distribution of “Island Alphabet: Discovering the Virgin Islands Letter by Letter,” a culturally rich children’s book created in collaboration with local students, artists, and educators.

Inspiring Futures

  • The Mangroves in the Classroom program, led by the University of the Virgin Islands, brought hands-on environmental education to 307 participants across St. Thomas.
  • Tashema Clarke, recipient of the 2025 CAHS Alumni Physician Scholarship is attending Howard University College of Medicine and pursuing an MD.
  • Priscilla Quinn visits CFVI to launch new scholarship in memory of her late husband
